Low CBD oil prices isn’t always a good thing, and it is something to watch out for as it’s our natural instinct to go for the lowest price possible. When discussing CBD oil, though, ones that are “abnormally” cheap will probably mean they have a low concentration (remember the Flaxseed analogy?). Prices of quality CBD should range around $50-$90 for a 300mg bottle.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks to widespread use of CBD is price. High-quality tinctures from brands like Floyd’s of Leadville and PlusCBD cost $35 or more; the bottles contain enough tincture to last about a month if you’re using an eyedropper’s worth per day. Prevail’s 2-ounce topical salve, which the company says should last most users between 30 and 45 days, costs $133. A one-month supply of a daily gel typically costs $30 to $60.
Scientists have made a lot of progress in understanding how CBD produces its calming, pain-reducing, anti-inflammatory effects in the body—and there’s still more to learn. We know that CBD interacts with many different receptors, proteins, and other chemicals in the brain. These interactions create changes in the activity of neurotransmitters, hormones, and other cells throughout the brain and body. Through these interactions, CBD appears to be able to affect many of the body’s functions, from sleep-wake cycles and emotional regulation to inflammation, pain perception, and seizures.
“Barely in its infancy, the CBD medical market is still largely unregulated; quality control is meager at best, and consumers are largely unaware what to look for when shopping …,” explains Carlos Frias of the Texas Wellness Center. Frias, who has been with the cannabis industry for more than 15 years, has seen, firsthand, the shadiness that exists in the CBD market.
In fact, numerous studies have looked at the relationship between CBD and pain, and the results are promising. Researchers have looked at various kinds of pain – from joint pain to cancer pain. One finding is that CBD increases levels of glutamate and serotonin – both neurotransmitters that play a role in pain regulation. And CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties help by tackling the root cause of much chronic pain.
More research needs to be done, but there is some evidence CBD can protect the heart against vascular damage caused by high glucose, inflammation, or type 2 diabetes, according to a 2013 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. The European Journal of Pharmacology also published a study earlier this year that pointed toward CBD aiding heart health. Perhaps what is most interesting is that CBD could mitigate the negative cardiovascular effects of stress and high blood pressure, providing a potential alternative to traditional medications used to lower blood pressure. 
For the record, for all the super sensitive people out there, I want to comment that CBD oil CAN get you high. NO REALLY. It can. And I’m talking about Elixinol. the recommended brand here, not some random adulterated stuff, not some high cbd marijuana, actual purified, tested, industrial hemp oil. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and experienced with my own body all the same effects from Elixinol, that I have gotten from eating a weed cookie (less intense, but still unpleasant). For me these side effects include full body convulsions and tremors lasting over an hour, anxiety and panic, disturbing disassociative and repetitive/confusing thought patterns, cottonmouth, and intense emotions and weeping. This was from 90mg CBD content at once. Which is more than recommended on the bottle but still well within the realm of a reasonable dose. Like an edible the effects took many hours to kick in, and then the high came on fast. I am also largely intolerant of caffeine and alcohol. However I never have any noticeable effects from most vitamins and herbal products. Not against CBD. Just saying it is possible, even if no one believes you.
The medical use of marijuana has brought some attention to the subject of using cannabis-derived products for health, but it’s important to understand how CBD oil differs. We’ll get into this more in a bit, but the key difference lies in the parts of the plant being used to make the product. For example, CBD oil is also different from hemp seed oil, since it is extracted not from the seed but from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of hemp.
Watch Out For: Companies who won’t disclose their extraction method or utilize hydrocarbons like butane and propane. These substances are toxic in high amounts and even with proper purging, most hydrocarbon extracts contain residual solvent. Other extraction methods do not result in a full spectrum extract – meaning they were not able to extract all of the beneficial compounds from the hemp plant (i.e. you don’t get the full range of benefits).
One way I do get the benefits of CBD regularly is a teaspoon of this hemp-infused honey in my tea at night. It helps me wind down and get to sleep (and it’s not just my imagination… it has a whopping 20 milligrams of hemp oil and its relaxing effects in one teaspoon). Runners pushing themselves daily might want to try more. Floyd’s of Leadville owner Bob Bell says that the company’s 50-milligram soft gels are its top seller. Talansky says his baseline is a 25-milligram gel, plus applying a strong topical cream three to five times a day if a specific body part is bothering him. He takes more on his hardest training days to speed recovery.
